One of those things is a clear understanding of the different edge styles available in hardwood flooring. All hardwood floor boards have edges. But there are differences. Much like the width of flooring, the edge style can be a factor in your flooring choice.

Almost all hardwood floor boards have either a beveled edge or a squared edge. You may often see a beveled edge referred to as an eased edge. This often refers to the tapered edge of eased edge boards, which were reduced from the grooved edge of beveled edge boards.

Square edge hardwood flooring boards is where the edges of all boards meet at the square edge. This creates a smooth floor surface and allows for a consistent blend between floor boards. It can give a room a more refined, formal feel.

Eased edge floor boards are all slightly beveled. You can choose a floor board that features an eased edge to the length of the plank and also to the end joints. Eased edges can help hide minor irregularities (it tends to be hard to hide major irregularities).

Beveled edge hardwood flooring boards tend to have distinguished grooves. These boards are applied with a urethane finish at the factory. This gives a complete seal to the beveled edges. This helps in the maintenance of this flooring. The boards are easier to keep clean, whether by sweeping or vacuuming.
