Finishing Unfinished Hardwood Flooring

Unfinished hardwood flooring is a great choice for replacing part of an existing floor. But what about after you've purchased your unfinished hardwood flooring? What needs to be done to take your flooring to the next step?

You have the option of finishing your unfinished hardwood flooring. Here's one way, along with the items you'll need to complete the job:

  • Floor sander
  • 80-to 120-to 220-grit sandpaper
  • Wood stain
  • Brushes
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cotton rags
  • Floor gloss applicator
  • Polyurethane gloss

Sand the floor at a 45-degree angle from the direction of the floorboard. Start with the 80-grit sandpaper then re-sand with the 120-grit sandpaper. After sanding, wipe away all the dust.

Apply the wood, beginning with one corner of the floor. Let the stain settle on the wood flooring for a few minutes, then use cotton rags to wipe up any excess. Do this for each section until the floor is completely stained. Let the flooring sit overnight.

Pour a line of floor gloss across the floor boards near one wall. Use the floor gloss applicator to spread the floor gloss across the flooring. Do so slowly, to avoid creating bubbles. Repeat the process until the entire floor has been glossed. Let the flooring site overnight.

Use the 220-grit sandpaper and lightly sand the whole floor. It should be done just enough to take the shine off the gloss. Re-apply a second layer of floor gloss. Let it dry, re-sand and apply a third layer of floor gloss. Let the floor dry completely before using the floor.
