Wide Plank Flooring

As rustic hardwoods, such as hand-scraped flooring, are seeing an increase in popularity, wide plank options are experiencing greater demand. In the present, wide plank flooring can be purchased as one of two types of products: reclaimed, which is more expensive, and newly milled, with both solid and engineered options available.

Reclaimed wide plank flooring generally comes from older, colonial-style properties. This flooring adds to the country motif and is typically thicker.

Newly-milled wide plank can be up to 20 inches in width and is sold in all flooring grades, from clear to rustic. However, because this type is significantly wider and longer than standard flooring, manufacturers may use their own grading system to account for greater variance.

Engineered is one possibility for newly-milled wide plank flooring. Typically sold prefinished, this hardwood generally has a 2mm veneer, although some are being made with a thicker wear layer. Engineered wide plank does not exceed 48 inches in length.

What are some of the ways for using wide plank flooring? Aside from covering an entire surface with these wider planks, this flooring is ideal for random width or random length, combinations of varying width or varying length boards, respectively. While random width tends to change from three- to seven-inches in length, long-length boards may be as large as 84 inches.

Multiple brands carry or specialize in wide plank flooring. These include:

  • Award, a brand that specializes in wide plank. Hardwood can be purchased smooth or hand-scraped, with both solid and engineered options available.
  • Homerwood also specializes in wide plank flooring. At one point, they offered solely solid planks but have since expanded their product line.
  • Robbins carries flooring ranging from one to 18 inches in width, with boards up to 16 feet in length. Solid and engineered and domestic and exotic species are all possibilities.
